About Guam
A tropical oasis located close to the
equator in the Pacific Ocean, Guam is a small island rich in
culture and tradition. The indigenous people of Guam,
Chamorros, make up the majority of the island's population
followed in a close second by Filipinos, then people of
Pacific Island descent, white, and then Asian.
Guam is a territory of the United States,
and anyone born on Guam is a US citizen. The official
languages of Guam are English and Chamorro. English is
the primary language spoken on the island, even more so than
Chamorro, so if your visiting Guam you won't have to worry
about a language barrier if you can speak English.
When you first visit Guam, you'll notice the
strong Spanish influence in the culture and lifestyle.
This is due to the fact that the Spanish settled on Guam since
the 1500's and inter-mixed with the indigenous people of the
island - spreading the Catholicism and Spanish way of life.
You'll notice this in the religion, architecture, and food.
Today, many of the Chamorro people have some Spanish
ethnicity.
The main tourist hub of the island is
located in Tumon and is the most active part of the island.
Tumon is lined with high-rise hotels, restaurants, shopping,
and much more. It is located along the coast of Tumon
Bay which is the best place on the island to spend a day at
the beach. If your planning a trip to Guam, Tumon is the
most likely place you'll be situated in during your vacation.
